Malli and the Mulky Stories* is a collection of 12 illustrated short stories set in the coastal Karnataka town of Mulky in the 1960s. Spirited young Malli learns to ride a bicycle, braves a pond to swim, twirls in her Diwali dress, and finds wisdom in the most ordinary moments.

Description

Step into the courtyards and paddy fields of 1960s coastal Karnataka, where the Shambhavi River meets the sea and temple drums mark the passing hours.

Malli and the Mulky Stories follows spirited young Malli as she grows up in the riverside town of Mulky, surrounded by warmth, close-knit neighbourhoods, and everyday adventure. Across twelve illustrated stories, she learns to ride a bicycle with a friend’s encouragement, braves the pond to learn to swim, witnesses her family’s courage during a fire, twirls proudly in her Diwali dress, and finds unexpected wisdom even from a mischievous chapati.

These are stories about real childhood: the kind where learning happened through curiosity, participation, and the people around you. There are no exaggerated villains or dramatic resolutions. The values bravery, fairness, effort, and care emerge from the story itself.

Rooted in lived experience and brought to life by Naganath Gowripura’s warm, expressive illustrations, this is a book ready to be read together and returned to again.

    Namaskaram Sir.
I really loved the Narration. It was awesome and took me back on the time machine 🤩😁. I’m a few years short of 60😊 and more so because of that, I could relate to both the stories😁.

I would like to purchase the Book. As Mam informed, kindly share the website details so that we can buy it online.

  3. Usha Nayak | Ahmedabad

Liked your easy style, simple yet touching some chords. Your childhood as well as the narrative ease of expressing is enviable. You have a felicity with words and you describe the small absurdities of bygone ways of rural life with such simple, yet flowing description.

Well Mangal, the book may be meant for children but it is definitely for adults too. For our generation to relive an era that won’t come again.

Just a wild thought– Senior citizen townships may be interested in a reading and reminiscing session. A workshop talking about their interests, their youth and suggestion to youngsters. They are a captive group with minds still young and fertile.
